#CarnivalofHR - September 2019 Edition

September is a beautiful month, isn’t it? By now, the kids are back to school, the leaves are starting to turn, and most folks feel a sense of renewal as we enter a new season. Best of all, it’s time for another #CarnivalofHR. Is there anything better?

Before introducing our amazing contributors, please indulge this shameless plug. In addition to my day-to-day at Devon, I’m the program chair for the Women in HR Tech Summit at the HR Technology Conference, where we cover business-critical topics including D&I. If your travel plans include #HRTechConf, please use the discount code #HRCARNIVAL to save $$ off your registration. Thank you, and you’re welcome.

Now, what a great line-up we have for you, dear reader! Starting us off is Judy Lindenberger, president of The Lindenberg Group, an HR consulting firm. Judy is helping us answer the evergreen question: Who to Hire?

Speaking of recruiting, LinkedIn took a hit when the federal appeals court rejected its attempt to stop an #HRTech company from leveraging member profiles. Katie Achille (second shameless plug: one of the fabulous Achille girls) covers the news for RecruitingDaily.

I’ve known Melissa Suzuno since her days at Parklet, so it was great to hear from her and read her submission from Greenhouse. It’s chock-full of great advice to improve the candidate experience – especially how to use Greenhouse’s candidate survey to make improvements.

Career coach and recruiting expert Yvonne LaRose reminds us of the need to make adjustments and re-alignments in her post titled “2019 Recruiting and HR Forecast: Adjustments.”

As we enter into performance review season, how can you help managers address performance issues? A big thank you to Culture Amp People Scientist Kevin Campbell via the team at Udemy for his blog on the "Manager's Guide to Addressing Performance Issues." Based on Culture Amp survey data, he shares the best way to address performance issues

We have a lot of conversations at work and performance reviews are just one example. Anthony Paradiso does an excellent job of recapping what other discussions can make us uncomfortable in his blog about diversity, inclusion, equity, and race.

Sometimes work isn’t perfect and it’s hard to keep your head above water. That’s why this blog post from Coralie Sawruk at Achievers is so relevant. Her 14 quick wins for stress management are a must-read for all of us. Of course, any mention of Achievers’ blog would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to Kellie Wong, the award-winning editor of “The Engage Blog.”

And speaking of stress in the workplace, Corrie Mieszczak of Grokker lets us know that the numbers never lie. Check out her compilation of stats covering employee burnout and stress. Holy moly!

We can all learn from this article by Mike Wood of Workhuman in which he reviews the role of HR data in creating Cisco’s culture.

People are our greatest assets – and when they have a grievance, they need to be heard. Sabrina Baker of Acacia HR Solutions offers a valuable roadmap in her post titled “Three Stages of Employee Grievances.”

When things cannot be resolved, sometimes there’s a parting of the ways. Stuart Rudner of Rudner Law covers termination clauses in his video.

It’s been a pleasure to host this month’s Carnival and thanks, as always to our friend and colleague, Robin Schooling. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you at HR Tech!
