The Carnival of HR – June 2022 Edition
June is a big month. It marks the halfway point in the calendar year, gives us the official start of the summer season and involves a flurry of activity, including Father’s Day, proms, graduations and more. On top of that, June is also a big month for diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging between LGBTQIA+ Pride and the commemoration of Juneteenth. As more and more organizations adopt DEIB initiatives and work to create safe, supportive spaces for their teams, we put together a collection of articles that look at different ways to approach the process:
Sarah Morgan, DEI Director at Humareso, shared, “Juneteenth Is Coming - How to Do It Right!” Even though the date passed for 2022, Sarah offers thoughtful tips to help employers plan for next year.
The team from Crosschq posted “From Donuts to Diversity: A DEIB Quiz.” The blog looks at various facets of DEIB and enables readers to score their workplace.
Joey Price and Sommer Ketron released a new episode of their podcast series, While We Were Working, titled “What Viral TikTok Series 'Salary Transparent Street' Revealed About Pay Transparency and Equality.” Tune in to hear their guest Hannah Williams’ take on the issue.
Tim Sackett asked the relevant albeit difficult question, “Is it okay to be biased toward underrepresented communities in hiring?”
Anthony Paradiso and JoLynn Haresign, both Vice Presidents of HR Support Services with Industrial UI Services, offered actionable advice for HR teams keen to create more inclusive workplaces after June ends in “Incorporating LGBTQ+ Pride Month into the Larger Picture of Inclusivity in the Workplace.”
Likewise, in “3 ways to make your Pride Month investments last beyond June,” Jen Colletta of Human Resource Executive looked at how Accenture promotes DEIB year-round, while Kristen Parisi of HR Brew published, “Anti-racism workplace educators: Juneteenth is an opportunity for sustained change beyond just one holiday.”
WorldatWork’s Workspan put out “Inclusivity and Flexibility: Top Remote-Friendly Companies for LGBTQ+ Workers,” which offered a look at how different companies stack up.
Katrina (Kat) Kibben, founder and CEO of ThreeEars Media, wrote: “Getting It Right: Helping Navigate Pronouns During Job Interviews” for the newly formed Human Resource Standard Institute, the first in the industry to offer organizational certifications for diversity and inclusion.
And finally, Lex Kremer of JobSync gave us valuable life lessons based on their friendship with Kat in “How to Be a Better Ally.”
With this month rapidly coming to a close, there’s still a lot to consider regarding DEIB, and we hope this list gives you a good start. Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for next month’s Carnival of HR.
